These 9 Companies Offer Sabbaticals in Their Employee Benefits

More and more companies are including sabbaticals in their employee benefit packages, and I am here for it. Each comes with a list of caveats, but these policies are still generous. They represent progress in how companies approach work life balance for their employees – suggesting a transition from reactive efforts (“Oh no, everyone is quitting!”) to proactive efforts.
According to World Population Review, relative to virtually all other countries in the world, the US remains far behind when it comes to time off. We’re one of just a few countries in the world that doesn’t require a minimum number of paid days off. And we’re not just behind Europe. Countries like Libya, Afghanistan, and Venezuela offer 22, 35, and 29 minimum days paid leave annually (respectively).
So, if American companies are stepping their toe in the warm sabbatical waters, I’m all for it.

1. Instacart: Offers 4 weeks off after reaching 4 years of tenure
2. REI: Offers 4 weeks off after achieving 15 years of tenure and then an additional 4 weeks off every 5 years after that
3. Patagonia: Offers 2 months off to volunteer via the Environmental Internship Program
4. Genentech: Offers 6 weeks off every 6 years of incremental tenure
5. Thoughtworks: Offers 3 months off after 10 years of tenure and then 6 weeks off every 5 years thereafter
6. Adobe: Offers 4 weeks off after 5 years of employment, 5 weeks after 10 years, 6 weeks after 15 years, and 6 weeks every additional 5 years thereafter
7. Intel: Offers 4 weeks off after 7 years
8. TravelPerk: Offers one month off after 5 years
9. AutoDesk: Offers 6 weeks off every 4 years of tenure
